Pure fan theory speculation, but I would say that Asuka Soryu Langley of Neon Genesis Evangelion isn't just (half)German, she's an uptight PRUSSIAN. Like even other Germans would find her annoying. She's not nearly laid-back enough to be, say, Bavarian or a Rhinelander or even Swabian or a Saxon. Nope, her whole demeanor screams ram-rod up-her-ass Prussian. Militaristic, belligerent, arrogant, by-the-book, etc.
In Peter Jackson's restored footage documentary film They Shall Not Grow Old there is an oral history account of German units made up of Bavarians and Swabians and Saxons glad to surrender to British units and get out of the fight. They would joke about the German units still in front of the Brits and tell them "hey, those guys are all Prussians....go kick their asses for our sake, too."; Germany may have been a united country, but those regional divisions go way back and are still culturally meaningful. The Prussians are often satirized and mocked for being the most militaristic, the most uptight and humorless, etc. They unified the country, yes, but the rest of Germany resented them anyway.
In the "future" 2015 of the fiction of NGE, Asuka would hail from a reunified Germany. Indeed, if born in 2001, a she would only ever have known a unified Germany. The Cold War would be only something she read about in history books; it would mean nothing to her in terms of lived experience.
Berlin would always have been a reunified city, etc. Asuka was probably only just beginning watch the sunset from the Fernsehturm, to hang out in Kurfürstendamm and hoping to kiss a boy when she was pressed into service then sent to Japan to fight for NERV.
