Brief rundown of what I’ve been watching lately. I recently finished a few series on DVD/Blu Ray. Among them, Collection 1 of Majestic Prince, which I really liked. Love the story, the space battles, the character designs reminiscent of Fafner and Heroic Age. This was a great acquisition on Blu-Ray and I look forward to the release of Collection 2. I have also recently acquired but haven’t yet watched Collection 2 of From The New World but look forward to doing so as I really enjoyed Collection 1. I also have now finished Disc 2 of the Blu-Ray release of the English dub of
Toradora! and am now officially ahead of where volume 6 of the manga, currently in print, leaves off. In the anime, Minorin openly speculates she might be a lesbian. The anime is also better at already alluding to this possibility than the manga.
As previously stated, I also finished volume 1 of Kill La Kill and look forward to the release of volume 2 in October 2014. Aniplex definitely “kicking it old school” with the nature of this release, volume by volume. I’ve also got just a few episodes remaining of Part 1 of the FUNimation release of Attack on Titan. I think the Toonami broadcast schedule has already outstripped this release so it’s back to my DVR for the rest of summer. I had to watch the last episode of
Blue Exorcist in Japanese off Netflix because I forgot to DVR it from Toonami.
Speaking of Netflix, I’m currently working my way through My Bride is a Mermaid, a very goofy Rom-Com from FUNimation, featuring Alexis Tipton in the role of Sun Seto, the mermaid character referenced in the title. The opening song is very catchy and has a 1960s “Beach Boys” vibe to it, albeit with a sushi-flavored J-Rock twist. Sun is the daughter of a Merfolk crime boss; Merfolk actually walk among us; a splash of water reveals their true Mermaid form; their legs vanish and their fishy bottoms appear, ready for swimming. It has the usual romantic tensions with the childhood best friend Miwari (as voiced by Caitlin Glass), the Police Superintendent’s daughter. The ADR director has Alexis voice Sun with a bit of faux New Jersey spunk, and somewhat lacking in formal education and social niceties. She’s a mob boss’s daughter ya see, and even has a foul-mouthed conch, Maki, voiced hilariously by Monica Rial, as her personal body guard. The hero of our story, Natsumi, voiced by Todd Haberkorn, is rescued by Sun from drowning, but he has thus seen her in her true form. Her secret revealed, Natsumi has two choices. Sleep with the fishes, or sleep with a fish; i.e. face execution, “mob style”, or else marry into the family by taking drop dead gorgeous Sun Seto as his bride. Lucky for Natsumi, this choice is a no brainer and he immediately proposes to Sun, who accepts. But it’s going to be a long engagement full of zany hilarity, high drama, and a divided pair of in-laws, some of whom embrace Natsumi (i.e. Mom) and some of whom would rather “off” our hapless human (Dad). It’s a humorous look
at young love, learning to build trust, learning to value and treasure each other, respect, etc. and move beyond physical infatuation to a more mature love upon which a successful marriage can be built. Anyway, I own this series on DVD but have been watching
it on streaming because I can’t watch my DVDs at lunch at work the way I can Netflix on my iPhone. I’ve also resumed watching Part 2 of Aquarion EVOL on FUNimation, having recently finished Jormungand. Long term, I still need to pick up with where I left off on
Fairy Tail, just after the introduction of Brittney Karbowski’s character Wendy and her faithful flying white cat companion, the object of Happy’s affections. Also, been trying to get caught up more on Anime podcasts, including the recently revived Fightbait Anime Podcast.
Also keeping up with the AAA Podcast but fallen a bit behind on the Toonami Faithful podcast on account of falling behind on the Attack on Titan episodes on Toonami.
