I am a big fan of Japanese High School Anime, whether its the central focus of a story, like Azumanga Daioh! or merely the setting of a story, such as Girls Bravo!. Azumanga Daioh! will always have a special place in my heart, but lately my most favorite Japanese High School Anime series has by far been School Rumble, Seasons 1 & 2. Warning to those who haven't seen this series yet, *SPOILERS FOLLOW*
This series is about star-crossed love...Tenma (voiced by Luci Christian) loves Karasuma, who is nearly oblivious of her. Meanwhile, the school bad boy Kenji Harima (voiced by Brandon Potter), loves Tenma, but she hasn't got a clue and at best regards Harima as a casual friend. Complicating matters further are supporting characters like Tenma's younger sister Yakumo (who is physically taller and more mature than her "big" sister), as well as Tenma's classmate, Eri Sawachika (voiced by Leah Clark), aka the poor little "Rich Girl" whose businessman daddy obviously neglects her. Early on, the first time Harima screws up the courage to confess his feelings to Tenma, he accidentally spills his guts to Eri, who is completely floored by his confession, which she believes was directed at her. There's no way for Harima to take back his statement without insulting and hurting Eri and causing Eri and Harima to lose face, so he just leaves. This early plot development sets up a romantic and sexual tension between these two characters that will continue through the series and is never fully resolved. As the series continues, Eri finds herself increasingly attracted to Harima, but she has trouble admitting it to herself openly. On the surface, she despises him, but Harima's confession stirred something deep within Eri's heart that will not rest. Eri can be a b*tch at times, and once made a less than flattering remark about classmate Mikoto Suo (voiced by Brina Palencia, playing an uncharacteristically outgoing character this time; I'm so used to her playing the quiet, deadpan girl...Yue Ayase, Yin, et. al.) within her earshot. Mikoto's love, we learn, already graduated from High School and is off in college. She never confessed her feelings to him but pines for him just the same. She admits she's kind of an emotional mess.
Eri can also show moments of extraordinary, unexpected kindness, like when she picked up Harima's restaurant tab when he took Tenma and company to the most expensive, exclusive restaurant in town just to see Tenma laugh and smile. She has a softer side that she rarely lets show.
The comedy of the series is all wrapped up in just how horribly badly the characters all misread each other's intentions, deceive themselves, deceive each other, etc. With all of these often mutually exclusive, competing desires, it's pretty clear that at least some people are going to get their hearts broken. As the tagline to another series puts it well, "Love is not a spectator sport"; One might also add, love is a full-contact sport. It also bears out the Buddha's teaching that desire leads to suffering. And how! These characters often suffer quite badly because of their love and attachments. You really feel for them, and that's what I love about this show.
As a male viewer, I can't help but root for Kenji Harima, the underdog. Many years ago, a young Kenji Harima saved an even younger Tenma Tsukamoto from being assaulted by a gang of bullying boys. She fainted, and he carried her back to his apartment. Harima was so struck by her beauty he wanted to kiss her; Just at that moment Tenma came to and smacked him away, calling him a pervert and fleeing from her erstwhile rescuer. Ever since, Harima has changed his appearance so Tenma won't remember who he really is, but he's never forgotten Tenma and harbored an unrequited love for her ever since.
Harima becomes good friends with Yakumo Tsukamoto, Tenma's younger sister, which Tenma misinterprets as a romantic attraction.
In Season 2, called "Second Semester":
Yakumo begins to catch on that Harima likes her sister and realizes Tenma doesn't have a clue about this. Yakumo has grown to know and trust Harima, and knows that beneath his rough exterior he really is a good man, and a potential good match for dopey Tenma. Second Semester closes with Yakumo beginning to make efforts to bring Harima and Tenma closer and try to clue her big sis in that Harima likes her.
There are moments of genuine affection between Harima and Tenma that sometimes catch Tenma by surprise, and sometimes she lets on feelings that go beyond mere friendship. Tenma *is* falling for him, in subtle ways, but it's an agonizingly slow transition. She also has her own desires for Karasuma, who also, very slowly, begins to at least acknowledge Tenma's affections. Kenji Harima is also a budding artist, who expresses his love for Tenma in thinly disguised Manga comics. I have to say something about Brandon Potter, the comedic/action genius voice actor behind Kenji Harima; He completely makes this series what it is. Luci Christian is wonderful as always, but Brandon has that perfect match of gravely voiced action hero and comedic brilliance that also shines through in Sven Wolfried from Black Cat and from his supporting character in Darker Than Black.
My favorite voice actress, Miss Monica Rial, only plays a supporting character, Lara, an exchange student from Mexico. Monica is of hispanic descent herself, and she really plays up the Hispanidad in Lara....Lara is loud mouthed, rough, and so completely over the top that I laugh my ass off every time she speaks...Monica lays on the accent really thick and even slips in some ad libs in Spanish for comedic effect. I love it.
There are other romantic subplots that happen in the background between the supporting characters that are sometimes foregrounded as a way to bridge between the main story and the sub plots, to keep things interesting.
Wikipedia even has a "love chart", which I include here:
=========================================================================
Most of the characters of School Rumble are involved in one-way love interests and several characters involved in love polygons. In addition, the cast for School Rumble is quite large. This creates a complex web of character relationships.

Complex web which adds to the tension and hilarity, especially when you factor in the key importance or politeness and proper behavior that is the cornerstone of Japanese society...which only adds to the awkwardness and makes it all even *more* funny.
I loved Azumanga Daioh! and it made me laugh, but none of the girls in that show had boyfriends and it was entirely about their friendships and school lives. Plenty interesting in its own right. Full Metal Panic FUMOFFU is set in a Japanese High School and it was hysterically funny, but it's a spin off from a more serious "Mecha" series. But all things considered, no Japanese High School Anime has made me laugh harder or clap my hands more than School Rumble, Seasons 1 & 2. The only thing I haven't seen is the School Rumble OVA, which I earnestly want to see as soon as I can manage it:
If you want a series that will make you laugh out loud, is based in reality, and with beautiful characters that you can still relate to on an emotional level, check out this show!
